Top 5 Anti-Inflammatory Myths

There are a lot of different “cures” for inflammation. Whether you’re sifting through ancient Chinese anti-inflammatory herbs or testing out a new exercise routine, various myths surrounding inflammation continue to plague the health community.

Don’t worry. AlphaFlex® is here to set the facts straight.

Myth #1: All Anti-Inflammatory Medications have minimal side effects

Unfortunately, this is the exact opposite of the truth. Anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen, Advil, Aleve, Celebrex and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can cause a variety of side effects, including potentially life-threatening stomach ulcers. Other side effects, such as kidney failure, dry mouth, abdominal pain, diarrhea, swelling and dizziness can also occur. All-natural supplements like AlphaFlex® or fish oil are the only anti-inflammatory agents known to have no adverse side effects.

Myth #2: Citrus Fruits Cause Inflammation

Many online forums condemn citrus fruits claiming that they promote inflammation. There is, however, very little scientific evidence (if any) to confirm this hypothesis, as citrus is rich in vitamin C and has been proven to reduce Osteoarthritis progression. Citrus is also known to play a critical role in the formation of cartilage, and vitamin C is an antioxidant.

Myth #3: A Raw Food Diet Relieves Inflammation

Similar to your palate, the bacteria in your gut grow accustomed to eating your favorite foods and have difficulty processing foods that are out of your normal repertoire. A sudden change in diet can actually promote inflammation, rather than relieve it, making a raw food diet a poor plan for inflammation relief. Although eating more fruits and vegetables is definitely a step in the right direction, switching your diet to entirely raw foods is not necessarily the ideal solution.

Myth #4: Inflammation is Always Visible, and Always Causes Pain

There’s a reason why people refer to inflammation as “the silent killer.” “Systemic Inflammation,” or internal inflammation, exists in a variety of different systems throughout your body. It doesn’t normally cause pain, and frequently goes unnoticed until it has progressed enough to affect the function of your cells. If you have a diet high in processed foods and saturated fats, it’s likely that you are inflamed without realizing it.

Myth #5: Eating a Diet High in Fish Is the Same as Taking AlphaFlex or Fish Oil Supplements

Unfortunately, diet alone cannot take the place of AlphaFlex® or other anti-inflammatory supplements. Although the Omega-3’s found in fish have anti-inflammatory properties, the quantity of fish that you would need to eat in order to match the anti-inflammatory power of a supplement is unattainable. Fish can also be high in mercury, and excessive consumption could potentially result in mercury poisoning.
